SEATTLE – The Seattle City Council voted 6-3 Monday to override Mayor Jenny Durkan’s veto of restrictions on the sugary drink tax.

Last month, the council voted to approve restrictions on the Sweetened Beverage Tax revenues to original healthy food access programs, removing the portion of the tax now going to other social services. The restrictions passed by a vote of 7-1.

The tax has raised $7 million more than expected, and Durkan wanted to use the money to fund programs such as food banks and senior meals.

“I think that there’s no way at this time in Seattle that as mayor I could agree cutting money for seniors and food banks,” Durkan previously said.
