June 23rd to June 26th The high school football team went to camp at George Fox University in Oregon. All three teams went. Varsity, Junior Varsity (JV), and the C Team. The first game Scott made 4 touchdowns and 2 turnovers and ended up pulling his hamstring and did not play again that weekend. Sunday Toby and I drove down to camp to watch the late scrimmage. We arrived early and players were in their dorms, so we decided to go get a bite to eat. As we were leaving the parking lot we noticed three of our coaches walk out to an RV one of the coaches brought down. We came back and watched the late scrimmage and was glad to see that Scott was not playing which could harm him more. We also brought down a pillow for Scott. Somehow there was a miscommunication and players nor parents were told to bring pillows, blankets, sheets. Once our team was done with the scrimmage the players came to sit in the bleachers where the parents were watching. Toby told the group of players sitting with us that we saw the coaches walk out to the RV and they all replied or agreed with the players when they stated the coaches go out there to get drunk. Although at this time I did not feel comfortable with what I was hearing I could not prove that is actually the coaches do out there when they go out there. I would hope the coaches were not drinking alcoholic beverages while they are supervising over 100 teenage boys at a weekend camp. Coaches should not be consuming alcohol during a school related function on or off campus. Then the boys started telling us about what has gone on at camp. Five boys snuck out of the dorms and were caught twice by coach Foote. The players were then told to go wake up the teams around 11:45pm to punish the team for letting the five boys leave campus. The players had to do 100 burpees at midnight without any water being available to them. My son who pulled his hamstring on the first day and not allowed to play the rest of camp and had to do the burpees. I also heard of another incident where a player locked himself out of his dorm room. He went to take a shower and forgot to take his key. This boy could not find a coach to help him get back into his room, he was locked out for about three hours according to the boys. The boys then started telling me that the coach was screaming vulgar language at the boy regarding the forgotten key. At this point a parent asked where were the coaches and the boys replied that the coaches went to bar to get drunk. At this point I did start to get very angry. I could not ask the coaches because they were not sitting with the boys in the bleachers like all the other coaches. Our coaches were the only ones not sitting with their team. They were all on a patio of a building next to the bleachers. My son logged onto his Hudl account from my phone so I could see the first game he played in. All videos taken of the scrimmages were posted on Hudl. The first game was not on Hudl yet. Another player then expressed to us that Coach Platt called Scott and DJ “Fucking Limpdicks”. I was getting even more furious with what I am being told. By this time Toby and I had to leave the stadium to drive back home. When Scott got home on Monday June 26th he told us he had made captain. I was so proud of him. As Toby and I were driving home we were talking about how we felt about all of the information that we just took in. We as coaches, volunteers, know that when we are in charge of the children on the teams and it’s not alright to consume alcohol. We knew we didn’t know for sure if any of the situations really took place, there was no evidence. Once I got home I started looking through the Hudl application to see if the first game was posted yet and I noticed there was a link regarding skits. There are eight videos in this link. The players put on small skits or plays portraying the coaches. ALL of the situations that I was told about was in the skits!!!! In these videos a player portrays Coach P. asking Scott how to spell blood. Scott spelled in b-l-o-d, the coach and all of the players began to laugh at Scott. Even if Scott was not my son I do not condone this type of behavior coming from a coach. Coaches should never humiliate a child like this. Again as a coach myself I would never humiliate a child on my team. Another skit shows a of players portraying coach Caldwell screaming at the player that locked himself out of his dorm, then pushing the player. Another skit shows a team of players portraying a former coach on the team which I thought to be mean, I know boys will be boys. Another skit shows a team of players portraying a huddle. Two boys portraying Scott and DJ start to walk away from the huddle and another player portraying coach Platt yells at the two leaving the huddle. “Scott, DJ where the fuck do you think your going. Get back over here you fucking limpdicks” Another skit shows a team of players portraying Coach F. catching the five players, twice, off campus that snuck out. The video shows a player portraying Coach F. the first time telling the boys that if they get caught again the whole team will run. Then the player goes to sit down and he pretends he is driving again. Foote see the boys and tell them to go wake everyone up. Now I don’t know if any of the other coaches were with Foote when he caught the boys both times. Another skit a player is portraying a coach that states “ So were at the bar having a few beers….” I cannot believe what I am seeing. Again as a coach I cannot state it enough that this behavior is unacceptable. Tuesday June 27th Toby went in to ask the superintendent about the situations we were told that occurred. The superintendent was unavailable. According to Toby the secretary asked him how she could help him. He asked her if he could record the conversation and was abruptly and rudely told Toby no, Toby then leaves the District Office. He forgot that he was supposed to pay for our daughters cheer camp fees and went back later that day. As he was crossing the street another male was crossing the opposite way. Toby asked him who the superintendent was and the male acknowledges to Toby that he is the Superintendent and asked how he could be of assistance to Toby. Toby then asked if he knew of his coaches leaving campus to get drunk while on 24 hour supervision of the teams. Mr. Wharton, the superintendent, asked Toby to go in an set an appointment with his secretary. This appointment was set for Monday July 3 @ 2pm. Monday July 3rd Scott had weights and my daughters had cheer practice. I dropped them off at the high school around 9:30am. While the kids were at the high school I came home and started researching the high school staff handbook regarding their drugs and alcohol policy. Around 11am Scott calls me and tells me to come pick him up. I asked him what was wrong and he told me the coach just kicked him off the team. When Scott got off the phone with me he called Toby. I went to pick up Scott and was so angry I had a tears in my eyes. He was on the phone when I pulled up so I parked. I decided to call the Athletic Director Mr. Barnard to see if he knew that the Coach kicked Scott off the team. He had no clue. He had just had knee surgery and was not in the current loop. He then told me that this is Summer ball and they cannot kick him off regular season. Scott was at my window by this time and heard what Mr. Barnard said, Scott the stated “Well they just kicked me off the team” then Scott reached over hung up the phone. On our way home I asked what the coach said to him. Scott told me that coach Ronquillo told him he is off the team until this is settled. He also told Scott that if he had never played for the team then none of this would have happened. He also told Scott that if he can’t fix this situation he is off the team. As Scott was leaving coach ronquillo told him he had a job to do. At this time I couldn’t keep it together long enough to get home. Once I got home I had to call my mom because I was so distraught that I about started to hyperventilate and she calmed me down. How dare the coach to kick Scott off the team because Toby had a meeting set with the superintendent later that day. There was another parent at the scrimmage I was at and was sitting with us when all this information came out. I emailed her the videos and she wanted to attend the meeting as well. When it was time for the meeting there were myself, Toby, Misti Schaffer, and another parent. Todd Smith was also there on behalf of Toby. Todd Smith is affiliated with our league and a school district near ours. At first Mr. Wharton was not going to allow the others to come in with us. But in the end we all ended up in the same meeting. The other two parents expressed their concern that their boys were going to be kicked off the team once the coaches were told that they were at the meeting also. Mr. Wharton told them that there will be no retaliation taken against their sons. I then asked so how does this apply to Scott since he was retaliated against by being kicked off the team due to Toby setting up this meeting. Mr. Wharton could never give me a direct answer when I asked him this several times. He just stated he would have to get the other side of the story. Mr. Wharton did say regarding the coaches drinking that he did talk to coach Q and told him that stops now. I also asked Mr. Wharton if I could I go home and confidently tell Scott he is back on the team. Mr. Whartons reply to that was “No, you may not” I then asked why and his reply was that it has to come from the coach. I also asked Mr. Wharton what he plans to do about these situations and he stated again that he would have to get the other half of the story. The next day was Independence Day and I knew there would be no investigation until today Wednesday July 5th. I texted coach Ronquillo. “Hello coach Q this is Donna Cordova. I’m trying to figure out why you kicked Scott off the team, can you please explain.” His reply was that he will call me tomorrow at 11. Now I have two goals that would be accomplished this coming football season. One goal is to have my children grow up in the same schools until they graduate. So far, I have accomplished this goal. My second goal is that I would see all my children representing the same team on the same field at the same time. These two goals are about to be crushed. (11:47 pm Wednesday July 5th.) July 6, 2017 So today I went and met with coach Ronquillo (coach Q). I asked him why he kicked my son off the team. Paraphrasing his answer that he is protecting Scott from any animosity the team may have against him, more importantly coach P.’s son who is also a Captain on the team. He is also protecting his job, and his future of coaching. I told him I don’t believe this is the best way to handle the situation by removing my son from the team as retaliation against the meeting with Toby and Mr. Wharton. He said retaliation is not word to use I cut him off and said put yourself in my shoes regarding the situation and tell me you wouldn’t think of it as retaliation and he agreed with me. I explained to coach Q that Toby and coach P. have always had a negative relationship and it has never been a problem for the kids. The kids get along. Platt’s son and Scott have been playing for the same team for the last 3 years and there has never been any problem. When I brought up the skits he stated that they exaggerated instances. I asked him if it was similar to roasting the coaches and he said if you can’t roast the coach in front of him how they can feel comfortable with the coach or something to that affect. Coach Q also stated In the end I had to walk away from the coach because I wasn’t getting anywhere. I am so heartbroken, how do I fight for what’s right while my child is being retaliated against and is begging Toby to stop. My son does not want us to fight for him. Scott wants to play, but when Q removed Scott from the team Scott lost all respect for Q. I am so torn I haven’t been able to eat, sleep, been crying all week. Toby has spoken to the University regarding the coach social, and has also contacted the paper and the news. We have had discussions to our lawyer regarding all of this. Toby has also talked with the restaurant that held the coaches social for video to see if they were actually drinking. Friday July 14, 2017 Today an article came out in the Nisqually Valley News regarding this situation. First of we never accused the coaches of drinking, we simply just expressed our concerns for what we were being told. If Q is talking about our meeting was resolved he is beyond unbelievable. Our meeting was not resolved in any way. Mr. Wharton told the newspaper to contact Mr. Akiyama because Akiyama knows more about the situation than Wharton. I believe this is BS!! We took our concern to Wharton not Akiyama. Akiyama hasn’t even contacted me. No one has contacted me regarding this whole situation. The coaches and Principal and Wharton all denied consumption of alcohol during the camp. Wharton told us about his conversation with Q when Q said he couldn’t say that there was no drinking. Saturday July 15, 2017 A report on King 5 news came out today regarding this situation. They interviewed Toby and I along with our lawyer. The report talked about parents upset about drinking and swearing. NO!!!!! That was only our concern we didn’t know if it occurred or not at this point. I am angry because of the retaliation that occurred against my son. Sunday July 16, 2017 I can’t believe how much bashing I am seeing against my family on the King5 facebook page under the report. People are so wrong with their posts and their downright humiliating and untrue and mean! Ridiculing me as a mother Toby as a father and Scott as a player. I have been crying all day long. I couldn’t stay to walk in the LakeFair Parade with my daughters and team. I tried to defend my family on some of the posts but then those were just ridiculed as well. So I decided I would not look at the negative and stopped reading the posts. Monday July 17, 2017 I am starting to people defend my family by speaking out in regards to posts that have been posted. I removed all of the negative comments on my page. I understand other people wanting to stick up for the coaches. But what are the coaches teaching the kids, that it’s okay to protect those that lie? Thursday July 20, 2017 Another article came out today regarding this situation where players are sticking up for the coach even though there were some things the coaches shouldn’t have done. Monday August 14, 2017 I’m so confused, I received an email from Mr. Wharton regarding his plans on dealing with the situation. He says that Scott is eligible to play, and that changes are being made to the policy regarding alcohol. We have not heard from coach Q regarding Scott being allowed back. Scott does not want to play for Yelm anymore, and I can’t blame him. His coaches and his teammates turned their backs on him. Everybody who said they would stand with us will not come forward publicly without remaining anonymous. The coaches are still coaching also. What happened to zero tolerance? Scott wants to go to Timberline but says he will go to Rainier so Chaidez will transfer with. For one how do we know that Rainier will accept George. Timberline has declined our transfer and Rainier has also declined our transfer. Toby says there is a School Transfer waiver form that can be filled out which makes the school district take Scott after being denied. I will check on that tomorrow. Now even if I can get him transferred I will have to appeal with the WIAA for Scott to play varsity. If denied then he will have to play JV if at all. I started considering moving Scott to my mom’s so he can enroll in Bethel. There are rules that state I would have to go through the courts and give custody to my mother. Tuesday August 15, 2017 10am After extensive deliberation Toby is allowing Scott to return to Yelm after given the choice of Bethel or Yelm. I know Toby does not want those coaches to coach Scott. I hope in the end it ends with no more retaliation against Scott and for Scott to have the best senior year possible. I asked Mr. Barnard today that if Scott wants to come back, which he can by the email I received from Mr. Wharton. Mr. Barnard says Scott is welcome back and have every right to play with his team. Mr. Barnard said he would speak with Q and make sure that Scott is respected when he returns. I sent an email to him asking him what the outcome was regarding the conversation he had with Q. So…we shall see… August 15, 2017 3pm I am so angry!!!! Scott went to practice and walked into the coaches office to make amends. Q hands Scott a list and says see this list all I have to do is push the green button and your family is done for. When I asked Scott what he meant about done for, Scott tells me Q means disbanding the league we volunteer with and take everything we own. Scott hands the list back to Q and says this has nothing to do with me. Q says it has everything to do with Scott because he’s right smack in the middle of this. Then he asks Scott why he didn’t run away to another team. Scotts reply was he wants to play with his brothers. Q then tells Scott well go and see if your captains even want you back now get of my office. Scott went to his gear bag grabbed all his belongings and walked out. As he walked out he handed his helmet to his friend and said he quits he’s not playing for these coaches and calls me to come get him. I call Mr. Barnard to see what happened and he had to call me tomorrow. Friday August 18, 2017 Mr. Akiyama was the one that called me back and said they will be investigating tomorrow and set a meeting with me for Monday at 8am. I also asked Mr. Akiyama if I could have a copy of the list that was given to my son. I picked it up a few hours later. This list was an email that Q sent to Mr. Akiyama, Mr. Barnard, Mr. Wharton, Mr. Nelson, and Mrs. DuRocher. On this email Q embellishes Toby’s juvenile record. Racial names Q heard from others that Toby called him. It’s a list of Q’s grievances regarding Toby. The allegations are false. Monday August 21, 2017 I went to the meeting with my mom and Mr. Akiyama, Mr. Nelson, and Mr. Johnson (I believe, the other Asst. Principle). They are still investigating Thursdays situation. They were very informative though regarding transfers and enrollments and sports after a transfer. Mr. Akiyama says he will call me in a day or two. I mailed in an appeal for Timberline today. Tuesday August 22, 2017 Akiyama called to set a phone meeting for tomorrow at 7:30 am. Wednesday August 23, 2017 Akiyama called to tell me they are still investigating so I went and withdrew Scott from Yelm and enrolled him into Bethel High School. I couldn’t let this go any longer. I needed to get him back on the field. Football is this boys life!! Thursday August 24, 2017 Mr. Akiyama finally called me today. He said he may have a plan that will get Scott to come back. I told him he took too long and I couldn’t wait any longer. Friday August 25, 2017 My girls are at Yelm’s jamboree and was sitting up in the stands on the far right. Trina asked me to bring her food and as I got closer to the stadium my heart started beating faster, I felt light headed and started shaking. Thankfully a Kathy Chaidez was down at the gate so she took the food to trina for me. As I was walking out of the stadium I could hear the girls cheering and started crying because I felt I chose Scott over my girls. Is this going to happen every gameday? Wednesday August 30, 2017 I had a Dr. Appt today and explained my situation to my Dr. and she prescribed me lorazepam for gamedays. She also recommended that I seek counseling, so I will do that sometime in the future. Friday September 1, 2017 Today is gameday and I can’t stop crying. This is not how gameday is supposed to feel. I should be happy and all my kids should be on the same field. I was able to pull myself together for the game and even sat in the Yelm stands. Cheered for Bethel football and cheered for the Yelm cheerleaders. The lorazepam helped. Friday September 8, 2017 Once again it is gameday and again I am in tears. I miss my son. I feel like my family is being punished for something that we didn’t do. Are parents not supposed to express their concerns? I guess no good deed goes unpunished. Donna Cordova
