Costco, Home Depot, Ikea among stores that will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2018

Retailers are responding to customer backlash over the companies’ quests to make a buck on what is supposed to be a family holiday: Thanksgiving.

Big brands like Costco, Dillard’s, H&M, Home Depot, and Ikea are among 60 stores that have confirmed that they will not open their doors on Turkey Day, according to

Thanksgiving store hours have become increasingly controversial, as many view the companies’ bid to conduct business — with hard-to-beat sales, no less — as contributing to a breakdown in family time. As a result many stores have decided to close on Thursday or open late in order to get a jump on Black Friday.

Only a quarter of Americans are in favor of Thanksgiving store openings, according to Meanwhile, 47% of people are against stores opening on Thanksgiving, while 27% were indifferent.
