The United States Department of Agriculture announced it is expanding the requirements for livestock and poultry to be labeled as organic.
Currently, organic places restrictions on what animals are fed and when they can be given antibiotics. The new rules will also consider the animal’s welfare.
The rule will take effect March 2018. The goal is to create greater consistency in organic livestock and poultry practice standards.
According to the National Pork Producers Council, the rule is a ‘midnight regulation’ trying to be pushed through in advance of a new presidential administration.
