GoFundMe for Orlando shooting victims nears $3 million, shattering records

ORLANDO, Fla. — A GoFundMe campaign raising money for the victims of the deadly Orlando nightclub shooting has reached nearly $3 million, breaking records in the process.

Early Tuesday, the campaign, started Sunday by LGBT rights group Equality Florida, had received more than $2.9 million from 67,000 donors. According to the Washington Post, it is “both the largest and the fastest-funded campaign in GoFundMe’s six-year history.”

The previous record-holder was a campaign that raised $2 million for a South Carolina girl’s medical treatment, the Post reported.

Contributors to the Equality Florida campaign include California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, Cricket Wireless, Executive Pride and GoFundMe itself, the Post reported.

“We would like to inform all supporters that GoFundMe has contributed $100,000 towards this campaign, essentially waiving their transaction fee and ensuring the every single penny donated will go towards supporting the victims and their families,” Equality Florida said in a statement. “We are so grateful for all of the support the GoFundMe team has provided.”
